I would like to hear from lpn's working in Acute Care, etc. who are in labor unions. Is your union protecting your job or allowing LPN'S to be to slowly be relegated to work only in long term care?

Trying to obtain information on getting IV certification -- starting, care and maintenance in Philadelphia area.

The company that I work for recently stopped letting LPNs draw/administer heparin or initiate tx on patients with catheters. I have been working in dialysis for seven years and am also the center trainer and have trained RNs how to do these things. My company is the only one in Illinois to do this. If you work in Illinois and can help me reverse this stupid decision, please contact me.

I noticed on here under Mississippi it says "may administer IV meds." There are certain stipulations about that subject. In Mississippi, only IV-certified LPNs may administer IV antibiotics via IVPB that has been premixed by a pharmacist or an RN. They also may administer H2 inhibitors and proton pump inhibitors via IVPB rout. In Mississippi, LPNs are NOT allowed to hang fluids or IVPB meds via a central line. We can only give board-approved fluids and IVPB antibiotics via peripheral route. The only thing we can do with central lines are change the dressing per policy and procedure.

I am looking for a place to take an IV class in Virginia, Maryland or DC.

Hi, Deborah. Here's the info we have for Virginia: LPNs may administer IVs including all meds utilized in dialysis. Cannot administer blood without an RN signature. You may want to contact the board of nursing if you need more information.

Thanks.

I am attempting to ascertain whether or not it is within the scope of practice for LPNs to legally administer chemotherapy via IV infusion in Virginia. Please help.

In most of the states addressed above, they all let the LPN administer port medications, but Tennessee is much more strict than the others. Why? I did read an article where LPNs are decreasing, and I can understand this because when trying to get a job the only nurses wanted are RNs because the states are making things so hard on LPNs. Why don't they go ahead and grandfather clause us into an RN? At least we could find work.

I am trying to find an IV certification program to send LPN's to be certified. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I am IV certified but was wondering if I am allowed to do blood draws of any kind without a certification.

I understand that many hemodialysis units in the state allow LPNs to administer IV drugs, including vitamin D analogs, erythropoietin and IV iron. My understanding is that the LPN in Wisconsin can give IV heparin but the others are RN duties. Does anyone know the specifics?

Hi, Kendra. Please check our Certification Resource here http://lpn.advanceweb.com/Editorial/Content/editorial.aspx?CTIID=1520

The Infusion Nurses Society in Norwood may be helpful.

Good luck.

I'm interested in becoming certified in infusion therapy, not just receiving a certificate. Do you know of any accredited classes I can take? I found Medtexx. The class is $450 and it's supposed to be nationally accredited.
