On March 29, 2009, Robert Stewart stormed Pinelake Health and Rehab, a long-term care facility in Carthage, NC, shooting and killing eight people.

Among the victims were seven facility residents and a 39-year-old nurse, Jerry Avant Jr., LPN.

In an ADVANCE-exclusive podcast, editor Tom Kerr interviews James Powers, LPN, a co-worker and friend of the nurse who died that day while trying to save others.

Jerry Avant is truly a hero. Giving his live in the care of others. I did not know him, but I am sure he had angel wings before his ultimate sacrifice. Let this an example to all of us, that the God Lord has a purpose for all of us,regardless of with degree we have. I am sure Jerry will be missed in his family and community, and my prayers are with them. God Bless all how are caretakers.

I vote Jerry Avant, Jr, for LPN Nurse of the Year!!!
Not only was he a great, thorough, and precise
nurse, but he gave his life to save others. His
relationship with the residents was truly extra-
ordinary. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the
residents of this facility, the ones he loved and
took care of. God Bless Them

My thoughts and prayers go out to Jerry's family. Everyday we leave our homes to go to work not knowing what will happen to us. . Every day is a gift. He died caring for others. He is a true hero!
